MDF achieves "blue core mode"

MDF revealing the core of an argon plasma.

On Friday 8th July, we achieved a type of helicon discharge known as 'blue core' mode in which the argon ion light (480nm) dominates the emission at the centre.  This is in contrast to the pink purple glow seen at low powers in argon, dominated by argon neutral line emission.  This was achieved with an RF power of in excess of 500Watts, and a magnetic field increasing to 0.15 Tesla at the target region
