First plasma achieved in the Materials Diagnostic Facility

Announced: Monday 28 March 2011

First plasma in the Materials Diagnostic Facility was achieved in late March using argon as the fill gas.  Argon is being used for commissioning as its behaviour in helicon systems is well understood, and high density approaching 10^19 should be accessible with moderate power ~ 1kW.  THe installation of gas feeds and safety systems for hydrogen will allow plasma to be hydrogen plasma to be produced in the near future.
